The SunTap team

Mike Bloxam

As owner of SunTap Technologies, Mike works with clients to use the sun to save money on their energy costs or create investment income through the net-metering program. Mike’s experience of nearly two decades with solar energy lets him assess a site and determine the best and most cost-efficient solar technology to integrate.

Mike is an avid environmentalist, working on the board of ReForest London and as a member of the Advisory Committee on the Environment for London’s municipal council. His other community involvement includes acting as a volunteer co-ordinator for the London and Area Food Bank – where he has been a volunteer since 1999 – and being a whole-blood donor for Canadian Blood Services since 1999. He was the recipient of an Ontario volunteer service award in 2009 for his work at the London Food Bank. Mike has done fundraising for Make-A-Wish Foundation and Movember, and fosters homeless dogs through All-Breed Canine Rescue. Mike also helped re-establish the Green Energy London co-operative in 2012.

Before forming SunTap Technologies, Mike worked in a number of roles at a solar thermal manufacturing company, starting full time in 2006 after numerous co-operative education placements with the company dating back to 1998. He worked primarily as project manager for developing new products, including a digital controller and wireless monitor, which led to him being the inventor of solar energy water heating system – networking and method (September 25, 2008) in Canada (patent application 2,639,764) and the USA (patent application 12/567,007). He was also in charge of continuous upgrades to a proprietary software-based solar simulator, and used other various energy simulation tools to generate analyses. Mike was additionally involved with providing customer support and handling aspects of the warranty process, calibrating and maintaining the data acquisition system in the test laboratory, and managing the computer network and other IT infrastructure.

Mike is a graduate of the University of Waterloo, where he obtained a Bachelor of Mathematics in honours computer science (co-operative program). He was a member of the Midnight Sun solar race-car team, and helped organize the Canadian Undergraduate Technology Conference. During the five-year program, he had co-op placements with companies in Ontario, Québec, and South Korea.
