Solar water heating has been in use around the world by innumerable civilizations for centuries. The modern technology (solar panels on the roof connected to a separate storage tank) was officially patented by William J. Bailey on August 2, 1910 in California - 2010 marked the 100th anniversary.

This milestone anniversary proves the effectiveness of solar thermal as a means of supplying people with the majority of their hot-water needs. In fact, there is a system on an eight-unit apartment building in Miami that has been in service since 1923!
